Bedroom in Arles

Materials:

Vincent van Gogh executed The Bedroom in oil paints on a linen canvas, which was tautly stretched and provided a firm ground for his broad, expressive strokes. He applied thick paint with impasto, so that the furniture and bed hangings are raised. Warm earth tones-ochre and brown-prevail in the wood of the bed and the wardrobe. Soft blues and purples were used on the walls, a contrast to the warmth, adding depth to the space. He then used cobalt blue and ultramarine on the curtains and bedding, which gave even more life to the room. The floorboards were painted rich brown, which complemented the color of the room. Van Gogh's use of color and texture gives a feeling of intimacy and emotional warmth to the otherwise simple interior.

Inspiration:

The Bedroom is a creation inspired by Vincent van Gogh to show his longing for a quiet, warm space while he was in Arles. He wanted to express the feeling of closeness in his room, considered by him to be his shield from the hustle and bustle of life. This painting was a representation of his desire for stability and rest, after the events that happened to him regarding his mental health condition. The use of bright colors and simple subjects by Van Gogh reflects, in their own way, his closeness to space, so the expression of comfort and tranquility is born.
